hi ben

re, "Thanks for you help in the past"

you're definitely welcome. how about some feedback, please, on #reply-15930707 ? was the post clear? not clear? did you install dun and winsock upgrades? not install?

re, "I would like to update to ORS2 (Win 95B). MS knowledge base does not have an update ofr OEM systems. Any idea"

i keep win95a oem around on a back up computer and, like you, i kind of enjoy having it. so far be it from me to suggest that you upgrade... unless this is your only machine. <g3>

to the best of my knowledge, ben, you've reached the end of the road with the service release or service pack upgrades on that os. from the build number (4.00.950a) it sounds as though you already have service pack 1.
microsoft.com

you may have read this, but here is what the ms site has to say about the w95 oem sr2 update that is available (update meaning you must first have osr2 to utilize this patch)... "Version designators without a "B," such as an "A" or nothing after the number, cannot utilize this patch. Windows 95 may have been preinstalled on your computer. These installations are referred to as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) installations."
microsoft.com

all said, the most definitive explanation of the alleged availability of sr2 is from frank condron's site...

*********************************
"I have received many questions about a Service Pack 2 for Windows 95, and where to find it.

Actually, there is no official Service Pack 2 - however, Microsoft has released something called OEMSR2, short for OEM Service Release 2. This is an updated version of Windows 95 that is ONLY available when purchasing a new computer from an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Microsoft has not released it as a general-public update, and as far as I know does not plan to do so." worldowindows.com

there are still quite a few items listed on the win95 update site
microsoft.com
(including the dun1.3 and winsock2 ones noted earlier), that can improve win95's performance. i recommend the winsock kernel 32 update (that resolves a memory leak) as being 'must have' for win95.

but getting back to having reached the end of the upgrade road for that particular os... the reason that is somewhat fresh in my mind is because i have begun to run into obstacles with trying to load new versions of programs on that machine. a recent example is norton systemworks 2001. even though the carton says w95 on it, it's not until i tried the install that a message popped up saying the software will not load on win95 oem pc's. i have several versions of systemworks here in my software library (meaning hiding somewhere in the stacks on the floor and the shelves), so i was able to load the previous version.

bottom line, you can't upgrade that os to sr2.

good luck, and i hope this helps

:)
