Rob-- We are in agreement that the corner in Russia seems to have turned. However, according to both books, there was never a communist threat in Russia. Indeed, both books state that the communist party was controlled by Yeltsin as a pseudothreat, and that the communists participated royally in the looting of Russia.

You seem to give good motives to Yeltsin. The motives were entirely venal and predictable; power, ineptitude and money. E.g., Yeltsin allowed Berezovsky to control Aeroflot. Berezovsky then diverted all hard currency monies to dummy corporations and then, presumably, to his pockets. Russian generals sold immense arms to Chechnya and needed the war to cover "inventory losses". The degree of losses, and the scope of losses, due to crime and corruption was staggering. It seems that the looting party is over. FWIW, one of my friends, an international businessman, was forced to "sell" his company in Russia 2 yrs ago. He has begun investing again, tho not in LUKOY but another oil company. He has direct knowledge of the situation and agrees with the assessment that the corner is turned.
