Oops, should not have stated IPC. The statement should have been that integer performance of the 1.4 GHz P4 would be about the same as the integer performance of the 1.0 GHz PIII.

However, I should note that P4 surprised me on the up side. It turns out that a 1.3 GHz P4 generally beats a 1.0 GHz PIII. Additionally, it looks like the only real problem with floating point is that typical fp code is very bad. Just by truly optimizing for the PIII/Athlon, the P4 fp performance can improve dramatically. There is no excuse for the number of unnecessary FXCH operations in typical fp code.
