For someone with the namesake of "American Spirit" you have no guts. People have been saying for centuries that America would not work. It started with Great Britain and continued all the way through to the USSR. We all know how the American experiment worked out. So now people like you are saying a missile defense will not work. Please refer to your Bible, the book of Genesis. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Genesis 11:6. This verse is the Lord's response to the Tower of Babel. However, its meaning equally applies to any venture man puts his mind to accomplishing. Do you really believe that anyone could conceive a nuclear weapon in the 1930s? So whether its a nuclear bomb or missile defense it can and will be done. The subject of missile defense is not a Conservative/Liberal or Republican/Democrat issue. It is a matter of our nation's defense. The world is a dangerous place and I would rather trust my leaders whether Democrat or Republican versus any leaders of Europe. I don't understand why normal thinking people would be against a missile defense. Conventional weapons will not protect you and me from ICBMs. Please explain to me what you are afraid of with missile defense. Is it just a liberal bias? Even Clinton was for a limited missile defense. Eagerly awaiting your reply. Eclectus Got God? Got GWB?

Umm... Clinton gave the go ahead to continue development. Being the slippery political snake he is, he conveniently left it to the next administration to make the final decision. In other words, who cares if Gore or the Republican nominee get screwed, so long as it isn't me. I didn't hear any howls from the Left when Clinton was pushing ABMS... Derek

American Spirit, Well, I can see Bush succeeing in getting the Russians to agree to a small scale system suitable for dealing with rogue states as long as he makes it some kindnof joint effort with some shared work. After all both the USA and Russians can send 1000's of missiles against each other and a system designed as a perimeter defence against sneak attacks from rogue states is more likely to be used defending Russia than the USA. As for china, they wll know what would happen to them if the were on the receiving end of 1000 nukes, so all they might try is an anonymous strike from within(suitcase bombs) or the sea. That would leave the USA/Russia with no retaliatory target. yet with the limited defense it is not likely they would be able to send many sea based one with none being found. As for suitcase bombs, they are the ultimate terrorist threat. With a weight of about 60 pounds and a yield of 1000 to 15,000 tons of TNT(depending on the trigger and other details as well as who you read about them from) There are radiation detectors at all ports and border crossing that looks for certain frequencies of gamma radiation thet would tell the tale even with shielding. It take 2000 pounds of shielding to shaild a bomb from these detectors, but once in the country there are few internal detectors. There are a number with cameras on the Federal interstates that take a phot of any veehicle emitting radiation, but it is not a comprehensive web.. Bill
