<I am not sure though that I believe, as you seem to, in our abilities as humans to come to any kind of concerted effort and agreement as to what might constitute value. >

LLL, I don't think we need to all agree. There could be 100 competing cyberspace currencies, just as there are many competing regular currencies. Just as with the US$, which is ascendant, there will probably be a mainstream cyberspace currency. Which could well be the US$ if they run it right and don't use their political system, controlled by 250 million voters, to wreck it for the other 6 billion of us. It's quite possible they'll wreck it, just as the political system in California has destroyed the electricity supply system, resulting in shortages and rolling blackouts, just as occur in India [which I find very amusing].

There was a brief discussion about happiness. I've spent quite a bit of time in the USA and I've spent a few weeks in India. Despite grinding poverty, I would not be surprised if India has more happiness per capita than the USA [though I have no idea how an objective measure of that could be defined - I used worried expressions, tense, aggressive behaviour, friendliness, relaxed demeanour and that sort of thing, which I agree was a very subjective way of measuring it - maybe suicide rates or murder rates or Prozac consumption per capita would be another way of measuring happiness].

A multifaceted world seems a good idea to me. A bit like a very broad gene pool is good in the DNA world. We don't all agree on values of anything today, so I don't see a problem with not agreeing on values with multiple currencies. We'd buy and sell according to how we hear the music of the markets. [I do like that expression of Jay's and I think it really is close to music in everything but the sound - certainly the emotions are reflected].

I imagine, as you suggest, that some smart cookies will gang up with IT to offer a currency. People outside cyberspace could always use gold, US$ notes, sea shells, platinum buttons or anything else.
