re: "If we take note of those who seem to be least affected by this whole bubble dissolve, we look to the ILECs, who, most would agree, did the least to over-provision their platforms in anticipation of the coming tsunami. "

yep, good point. I guess we wait to see what HR1542 morphs into or where it goes from here, before we could even guess what they might or might not do going forward. Since a recent article posted here shows an ILEC FSAN FTTB deployment as providing 4Mbps at $1000 per month via 32:1 PON, we don't have to worry too much that they are the answer to the last mile. As far as the cable guys, the article posted earlier about DOCSIS 1.1 and VoIP being pushed into next year is only a surprise to the journalists. It doesn't represent any recent change in outlook. The wildcard for potential broadband news this year is WinFirst I suppose. Maybe late summer/ early fall we get some deployment news on that front. Its going to be a boring rest of the year for broadband. The IEEE EFM probably won't be far enough along by the end of the year to really say whether any "right" answers result.

Because all the infrastructure stuff is still developing, and/or in limbo, be prepared for a deluge of hype for residential gateways and home networks in the coming months. The analysts have to hype something or they go out of business; that seems like the most likely "next victim."
