understand why that yanks the chains of the faithful.


If you define rational as meaning based on concrete scientifically verifiable evidence then maybe I agree with you, but atheism would similarly be irrational and the only rational belief would be agnosticism. If on the other hand you would consider a thought or belief or idea to be rational if there is no solid evidence against it the person proposing it makes an argument for it based on valid logic then either faith in God, or atheism can be considered a rational belief.
