BANGALORE, India--The Indian subsidiary of Dell Computer launched a customer-support unit Thursday in Bangalore that will cater to U.S.-based clients. The global-services facility will initially provide support to Dell's home and small business customers in the United States and later be expanded to serve clients in other regions, the company said in a statement. The customer group will handle telephone-support issues and e-mail inquiries on technical support for Dell systems.

The Indian center will start with 200 seats, a number Dell expects to double within six months. The world's No. 1 personal-computer maker has set up the new unit in India to use the country's large and cost-effective pool of educated, English-speaking graduates. Dell joins General Electric's GE Capital unit and many global companies that are using India as a base for call-center operations or back-office services.
