<<Bush did very well in Europe. Amazing how his presidency has come around from the train wreck of one month ago.>>

No train wreck, he was doing the incoming president bit. Toss out all the previous crap, study the problems, get advise and decide from there. Smart way to go.

I really did not care one wad about what the "Europeans" ie Brussel's Eurocrats, said. The important event was the meeting with Putin.

Putin was very receptive, and mutedly praiseworthy. That bodes well. Putin had the upper hand, and could have made Bush look very bad. The fact that he didn't speaks volumes. Discussing the ABM treaty is a surface issue. All parties involved know damn well ABM is dead and pointless in the post Cold War world. The real discussion is Russian/US strategic relations, and China. It is vital that the US prevent Russia and China from forming an anti-US alliance. Its in the US best interest, in the 50 year old policy of preventing any power or collection of powers from controlling Eurasia. Its in Russia's best interest, to gain US recognition of Russia's Central Asian and Baltic sphere of influence, and counteract Chinese influence in the Russian Far East and Central Asia. Russia stands to profit from a non-hostile US and Europe, in the profit from providing energy to Europe, and hence boosting the Russian state's income.

Look to Russia and the US getting friendly, hopefully.

Derek
