My view is that Ciena is being tarred with the same brush as that used on Nortel et al. Fact is, there is no comparison. Nortel is a bloated monolith bogged down with a lot of excess baggage. That hurts.

On the other hand Ciena's business remains robust, and if anything they may have a hard time getting the product out the door. They may be facing some pricing pressure as Nortel and others write off their inventories, then essentially offer it our at fire sale prices. Fortunately, Ciena's bread and butter is in the high end, high channel count transmission market where they are seeing little competition, and optical switching where they dominate the market, set the standards, and set and control the ASP's. These products are the gift of life to the telecos. They will continue to pony up.

In the interim, keep your eye on the bond market teleco financing. This is a leading indicator that is now pointing up.
