The "War on Poverty" has run into the trillions. And, sure enough, it has yielded a constantly re-defined "poverty" so that the REAL beneficiaries, bureaucrats, can justify their existence...

You're right, the whole idea of public education is very socialistic. Do away with it all and allow only those who can afford a private school to be educated. The rest of them can dig ditches and bring us our martinis on the golf course. Also we could bring back slavery. Imagine giving all those poor colored people free educations with our tax dollars. (dark humor)

Actually without socialistic programs like public ed, Medicare and SS (which actually need a lot MORE money) then we have a Police State run by the rich. But since this is America not some Third World country we are supposed to goive everyone equal opportunity and a chance. It starts with education. An educated worker pool produces the best economy, makes for less crime and classs/race division and an altogether better society. Problem is we do have to pay for it. And that is called socialism. That is a dirty word to conservatives but they forgot most people are a product of government sponsored initiatives, including Colin Powell, Bill Clinton and a host of other of our greatest achievers. GW Bush on the other hand had everything fed to him on a silver spoon and ends up representing a constituency which seems to be mainly made up of heavy industry, pollutors and wealthy individuals trying to conserve their wealth. Maybe that is what conservative really means today. It certainly doesn't apply to the environment or fiscal conservation (paying off the national debt first).
