Indeed. I've known old timers, craftsmen, who could walk into a CO switching center and detect a problem with pin-point specificity, just by listening for several seconds to the music of the electromagnetic contact action. I've also known operations managers who have reached for their bottle of Valliums in sheer panic when the noise that you're referring to suddenly ceased.
