SI lawsuit…

On my profile, I have a link pointing to a wise investor. Whoever clicks this link will be taken to their own profile. A few years ago, this SI ‘feature’ was thoroughly discussed on the Laughter thread. At that time, I put this into my profile with the tag ‘Biggest idiot on SI’, and soon after, a prime candidate for the ‘Biggest Idiot’ title contacted me.

Evidently, he clicked the link, and not recognising it as a practical joke, believed that I had singled him out for ridicule. He contacted SI management and had his handle changed. Of course, when he clicked the ‘Biggest idiot’ link in my profile after changing his identity, his new profile appeared. Now he thinks that I’m tracking him and devoting my life to his on-line humiliation. I guess the fact that my entire profile was created in fun somehow eluded him.

He then sent me a PM, ordering me to remove the link or he’ll take action to take me to court. I reply by PM, explaining how the link works. I emphasise the point by drawing his attention that the only reason the ‘Biggest Idiot’ link displays HIS profile is that HE supplied HIS username and password, causing any insult to be the result of self selection. I explained that the link was meant as fun, and that I felt it was the equivalent of children putting a mirror in the bottom of a box with a sign on the side saying “Look inside to see a monkey”, and tried my best to re-assure him that I had neither any knowledge of him or his SI activity, nor any intention of harming his reputation.

His response to my apology and explanation was amazing. His anger remained unabated and his threats continued.

I now realise that I’m dealing with a genuine nut-case. Changing the link seemed the wisest response.

Cheers, PW.
