Tim, here's a classic on Federal regulation. There are calls for it in the case of amusement parks but nowhere in the article do I find an explanation for why Federal oversight would be an improvement.

Because that is simply assumed. Anyone arguing against it is considered either stupid or in the pockets of the industry that might be regulated. The possiblility that amusement parks might be kept safe because the owners of them don't want to hurt people, or atleast because of fear of lawsuits is probably something that is not even thought about much. Nor is the possibility that state or local governments could do the job if such regulation really is necessary. The article says "Safety advocates argue that it's time for the federal government to regulate the industry." Have you ever heard a story with a quote of "Saftey advocates argue that it's no time for the federal government to deregulate the industry"?
