All Dressed Up...

All Dressed Up And No Place To Go?

"The continued layoffs, facility closings, and bankruptcies in the industry reinforce my belief that when demand comes back, the industry will be faced with a severe capacity crunch. The question is: when will demand come back? Right now, corporations are using lower interest rates to restructure their balance sheets, rather than take on new debt.
And telecoms are focused on getting a return on the investment they have already made on long haul networks. Which strikes me as kind of ridiculous. Right now, we have the highways (the fiber optic backbone), we have the cars (personal computers), but we don't have the roads to get to the highways (the last mile). It's going to be darn difficult to get people to pay a toll if they can't get to the highway. The telecom infrastructure has been built bass ackwards, which is entirely understandable given that it is much cheaper to build a few highways than a few million secondary roads.
The whole situation reminds me of snow days growing up in Philadelphia. In Philly, the schools would remain closed for days after the highways and busy avenues had been cleared of snow, because the secondary roads were not cleared. Well every day's a snow day on the internet. In fact, the term "snow years" might be a more appropriate description of the state of affairs."
