Although my "Q" is in the right corner of the ZA icon we are probably talking about the same thing. It is an alert notification that ZA has blocked an intrusion attempt. Double-click on the icon and it will tell you about the attempted scan of your machine. If you have the show alerts popup checked I don't think you get the "Q".

I just went to Zonelabs and this is what I found in the online .pdf manual.

A silent alert will appear as a blue letter "a" in the system tray icon. The flashing
blue "a" feature cannot be supressed except if you are using ZoneAlarm Pro.


Looks like a Q to me too!
