My alternative is buying things when they're cheap and selling things when they're expensive. I have no idea when either situation will occur, hence I don't try to time things.

Sure. For example, if you want to buy the S&P 500 Index right now, it costs 1212.21. If you want to buy it and wait until June to have it delivered, it costs 1221.70. A note of caution, though: the leverage in this can be huge if you want it to be. Make sure you have looked into it thoroughly before taking action. I have seen a very many wealthy individual become not wealthy at all in a very short time trading futures.
