C'mon, spare me the capitalists' sales talk! A centrally-planned economy has ALSO its STAKEholders and must also handle arbitrages between several sectors and its decision-makers must also decide about the best allocation of their resources and moving money around accordingly... Of course, the ideological sales pitch for the masses is different: within a Communist fabric, you are told to drive a Lada or a Warburg automobile because doing so you'll further the "socialist cause"; you're told to wear the party suit to show your commitment to the nation's ideals; and likewise, you're expected to attend official festivities as a way to accomplish your "civic duty"... Hence, the emphasis is put on your collective responsability and the preeminence of the social fabric over the whims of its subjects. However, such a top-down management of society doesn't preclude "customer satisfaction" happening. Conversely, in our so-called "free market" society, you're told to drink Coca-Cola, drive an Audi, and go on a vacation trip to Mexico because you "deserve" it.... You, as a special, unique, brilliant, well-behaved individual are fit for that "consumer kit" specially packaged by our free-market society for the likes of you. Here the emphasis is put on the individual's allegedly free will. However, just as in the Communist framework, the aggregated behavior of all the consumers is also monitored from the top: overall economic growth, the real estate market, the trade deficit, etc are all key variables to watch in order to keep the mill running. Of course, no politico, no globaloney pundit, no Harvard PhD will blurt it out and intimate that some sort of conformism is expected from the population as a whole. None of the capitalist evangelists will ever hint at the vital necessity to maintain the current patterns of consumption --not for the sake of whimsical individuals but for the sake of the System itself....
