Oracle and Sun Free Developers From Proprietary GripCompanies Enable Microsoft Developers to Migrate Applications To Java Technology

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., and PALO ALTO, Calif., Jun 19, 2001 /PRNewswire via
COMTEX/ -- (http://www.oracle.com/tellmemore/?789234 ) Oracle Corporation
(Nasdaq: ORCL) and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced a
complete migration solution for companies to move their business applications
from proprietary Microsoft Windows technology to the open Java(TM) 2 Enterprise
Edition (J2EE(TM)) platform on the J2EE-compatible Oracle9i Application Server
and the Sun Solaris(TM) Operating Environment (OE). Now, with the Oracle
Migration Kit for ASP and Oracle(R) Migration Workbench combined with the
Sun(TM) Developer Kit for Windows NT and migration consulting services,
companies can move their Microsoft applications to the open J2EE technology
platform, allowing them to take advantage of the portability and productivity
provided by Java technology, while leveraging the performance, reliability, and
scalability of Oracle9i software and the Solaris OE. A manageable, phased
migration path enables development teams to ease into the new development model,
remaining productive and saving on training costs.

Microsoft developers are locked in a proprietary environment lacking the
scalability, reliability and flexibility required to create high-performance
Internet applications. Microsoft insists that developers be retrained and
applications be rewritten to run on future .Net technology. As a result, many
companies with existing Microsoft applications are looking for open,
standards-based development tools and deployment platforms. This new solution
from Oracle and Sun allows companies to migrate their applications and their
developers to the open J2EE technology platform while preserving their
investment in existing applications.

"Today, customers require that their Internet-based applications scale on demand
and deliver 24x7 availability," said Juan Jones, vice president of the System
Platforms Division at Oracle Corp. "Oracle's Migration Kit for ASP together with
the Oracle MigrationWorkbench offers a complete and simple solution to help
customers migrate to Oracle9i on Solaris servers and experience faster
performance and higher availability."

The comprehensive solution announced today includes everything Microsoft
developers need to migrate their proprietary Microsoft applications, data, and
operating system:

-- Migrating Applications 3/4 The Oracle Migration Kit for ASP provides
tools for developers to convert Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP)
applications to J2EE technology applications. The tools support a
phased migration process that enables a company to move to Java
technology in manageable steps. In the first phase of the migration,
customers simply convert their existing ASP applications to run as
J2EE applications and deploy them on Oracle9i Application Server.
This provides the benefits of greater performance, scalability and
reliability, while still allowing developers to remain productive in
their former development environment. In the second phase,
developers use additional migration tools to optimize their
application by taking advantage of Java technology functionality not
available in Microsoft ASP applications, and complete the migration
to a full J2EE-based development environment. With the Oracle
Migration Kit for ASP, Microsoft developers can get a jump start on
building open standard J2EE technology platform applications today.
-- Migrating Data 3/4 The Oracle Migration Workbench simplifies the
process of migrating from SQL Server and Microsoft Access databases
to Oracle9i Database. The Migration Workbench allows developers to
quickly and easily migrate an entire database (data and schema,
including triggers and stored procedures) in an integrated, visual
 environment.)
-- Migrating Operating Systems 3/4 The Sun Developer Kit for Windows NT
is a freely available collection of information, tools, hints and
tips, code samples, white papers and links to third-party migration
resources. Developers large and small can download the Kit and
immediately apply it to a planned or ongoing migration from
Windows NT to Solaris OE and/or Java technology. As a part of the
Sun Solaris Developer Connection(SM) Program, the Kit is available
to any developer via the Web.

"Our customers have asked us for easy migration solutions to move from Microsoft
to the J2EE and Sun Solaris platforms," said Doug Kaewert, vice president of Sun
Developer Network Group at Sun Microsystems. "Together, Sun and Oracle are
addressing this need and will continue to address customer requirements to build
scalable products on open standards."

Availability

Access to the Sun Developer Kit for Windows NT and the Oracle Migration
Workbench is available today from the Oracle Technology Network together with
registration for customers who wish be the first to take advantage of the Oracle
Migration Kit for ASP.
