The Times article agrees with your premise, i.e., that the "last mile" still remains the big problem, unsolved by millions of miles of fiber around the globe. It also didn't help things when it said, in another article, that the survival of companies like Lucent is NOT assured. In fact, their corporate bonds have just been downgraded to "junk" status, Who knew?
