One reason the Bush-Putin meeting in Slovenia went so well was that the Russian president knows his country needs help. His response to George W. Bush's affirmation that "Russia is part of Europe" was almost touching.

"This means so much to us," he said. Clearly, Vladimir Putin wants to extract Russia from Europe's isolation ward.
