>> Per capita GDP in China is US$800 a year <<

more like $4000.

You are so confused Craig. The $4K GDP figure is PPP adjusted. In greenbacks the GDP is $800.

Have a look for yourself:

China
GDP - per capita: purchasing power parity - $3,800 (1999 est.)
Source: CIA World Fact Book
cia.gov

you have it totally ass backwards. when you factor in PPP chinese require less money for the basic things, not more.

Read my posting again. The $800 US dollars in GDP become $4,000 in PPP dollars, exactly as you say. One needs $20,000 PPP dollars (not yuan, not US dollars, put PPP dollars) to buy a basic basket of goods anywhere in the world, that is what PPP rates adjust for. (And in the US exactly $20,000 US dollars would pay for that basket of goods).

if china doesn't have any discretionary money to spend how come they save 1/3 of their income?!?

You tell me. How do you save any money when your per capita income is $4,000 PPP adjusted??

Could it be that those savings are in the hands of a chosen few, and not in the millions of citizens.
