Sudan: Analyst Brian Prokop of investment firm Peters & Co. estimated Talisman's stake is likely worth between $1 and $1.5 billion. Potential buyers could include the Chinese state oil company, along with European majors such as Total-Fina Elf or Lundin Oil.

While the Sudan issue rages on, Buckee said Talisman is preparing to make a "politically impeccable" acquisition likely later this week, moving the company into a new country.

Talisman operates in Western Canada, the British North Sea, Sudan and Indonesia and has been trying to expand into the Middle East or South America.

From Calgary Herald, June 19

[My note: "between $1 and $1.5 billion" probably = C$, not US$]
