CDMA road show to be held in China

By Cho, Shi-ryong
Tuesday, June 19, 2001

CDMA road shows are scheduled to be held in major Chinese cities from June
19 through June 26 to build a cooperative relationship between China, a nation
that is set out to make large-scale investments in CDMA mobile telecom service,
and small and medium-sized mobile telecom businesses in Korea where the
CDMA system first originated.

In particular, the road shows are to be focused on core CDMA parts such as
repeaters since system providers and service operators such as Samsung
Electronics and SK Telecom have already made export contracts for their
equipment and technologies.

Therefore, the planned road shows are likely to decide as to whether the
slumped domestic CDMA industry will be able to recover. The road shows will
place a focus on enhancing CDMA industrial cooperation between the two
countries, establishing venture firms between small mobile telecom businesses
from the two sides and carrying out export consultation.

Prime Minister Lee Han-dong and Deputy Minister of Information and
Communication (MIC) Kim Dong-seon will attend the road shows to promote
domestic IT firms' entry into the Chinese market.
The shows will be held in
Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, and about 40 domestic firms interested in
entering the overseas market will participate.

Repeater makers are expected to attend the show in a large number, along with
terminal and wireless Internet firms, for business presentations, investment
explanatory sessions and product exhibitions. In addition to terminal makers
such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, specialized businesses
including Sewon Telecom, Danam Electronic Communication, ¡¤Main System,
KNC, and Withus will attend the shows from Korea.

About 70 Chinese firms are to participate in the shows - mobile telecom
manufacturers such as ZTE and Datang as well as small and medium-sized
firms and mobile telecom system builders
. In particular, KNC and China
HongShin will exchange a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a 2,000
dollar-worth repeater export deal during the road shows. Main System also plan
to sign a contract with Datang for 1.1 million worth export items.

"The scheduled road shows will serve to provide small domestic repeater
makers and other part manufacturers with a new market so that small and
medium-sized domestic equipment makers can secure a competitive edge in the
3rd-generation part market," said a MIC official. "During the road shows, we
expect that there will be a number of opportunities for domestic firms, such as
product supplies, joint ventures and technological cooperation," he added.

<Sources said the SK determined that W-CDMA-2000 service does not have any bright
business prospects and thus switched to the CDMA camp.>

Well, maybe the chickens are coming home to roost finally. Hard to get too excited about this because of all the false starts, but we all have been questioning why SK Telecom and KT Freetel would be so anxious to use WCDMA when they are the world leaders in the CDMA2000 race. Maybe NTT DoCoMo has finally run out of bait (money) to dangle in front of potential joint venture partners.

SK Telecom to Begin 2.5G Services Before May 2002
nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com

June 20, 2001 (SEOUL) -- SK Telecom Co., Ltd. announced plans to begin so-called 2.5G (2.5
generation) mobile phone services called CDMA2000 1x EV-DO before May 2002.

In a bid to offer the 2.5G mobile services, the Korean company signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S.-based Qualcomm Inc., which owns the patent rights to CDMA technology.

Officials of SK Telecom said they plan to complete the roll-out of networking facilities by March 2002 after selecting equipment companies at the end of this September.

Commercial services will kick off in 2002 in 26 major cities before Korea hosts the 2002 World Cup in partnership with Japan, said SK Telecom.

Other mobile carriers, including KT Freetel and KT ICOM, also are expected to begin 2.5G services early next year.

It's nice to get some firm dates for 1xEV-DO. I believe we have some fairly firm dates from KDDI also and a probable date range from Sprint PCS. Note they call this 2.5G. Doesn't SK Telecom have a CDMA 200 1X roll out in progress which is considered 3G? So if you have a 1X 3G network and add 1x-DO is it then 2.5G? 2.75G 3.5G? I've never liked 2.5G as a label, it's undefined.
