Ampex DST Archive System Helps Pegasus Broadcast Television Implement Regional Central Casting Operation

Three Stations in Mississippi and Alabama to Deploy Integrated Video Storage Solution

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 2001 -- Ampex Data Systems Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ampex Corporation (Amex:AXC - news), today announced that its DST video archive system will be integrated into a regional central casting operation for three stations owned or operated by Pegasus Broadcast Television, Inc., a subsidiary of Pegasus Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:PGTV - news).

Expected to go live on September 1, the Jackson, Mississippi-based digital broadcast management system will also include Sundance Digital automation software, a Leitch Technology video server, Insight Communications fiber optic link and Philips routers and output switches.

The new central casting operation will support WDBD-TV and WXMS-LP in Jackson, Mississippi and WGMP-TV in Gulf Shores, Alabama. WDBD is a Fox affiliate while WXMS and WGMP are affiliates of the WB Network and secondary affiliates of the United Paramount Network (UPN). The three stations are currently operated by Pegasus from offices and studios located in Jackson. WGMP will be based in Gulf Shores and clustered with its sister stations via fiber optic network.

According to Lee Carpenter, vice president of engineering for Pegasus Broadcast Television, central casting will allow the three stations to consolidate several business operations, including traffic, programming and accounting, while improving the quality of each station's video signal. Once it is operational, the 44-terabyte DST 714 automated archive library will store up to 5,000 active hours of programming and the video server will store up to 200 hours with each station having 12 hours on the server at any given time.

Ampex DST® automated cartridge libraries are high-performance, reliable digital archives with unlimited expansion capabilities to accommodate a facility's growing video storage requirements. The DST library reduces the overall time required to archive and restore program elements to a network of video servers. For the large number of broadcast and video houses currently using video servers, Ampex offers a bundled solution specifically designed for the broadcasting environment that meets all requirements for a compatible near-line archive to achieve complete automation.

It's good to see were still shooting rabbits while we're out there looking for bears.
