The K6-III had a high IPC, too. But, like Itanium, it hit a brick wall in terms of scalability that capped its performance.

IPC is important, and so are MHZ - you need both.

Intel has IPC in Itanium and Tualatin and MHZ in P4.

AMD has both in the Palomino core sold as Athlon4 and AthlonMP.

Unfortunately for Intel, unless you have both in the same chip, you're left with the equivalent of a K6-III and you lose money and market share.
