well why don't individuals just "band together" and SHARE an LMDS/MMDS connection ??
I investigated that in my rather tony neighborhood about 7 miles outside of Bend, OR. I found that the neighbors, mostly on 5 to 20 acre parcels were, on the whole, hardly interested in the Internet, and my main thrust for setting up the system, free LD calling, wasn't technologically ready for prime time. The costs of the radios was exorbitant and there were no customers. So, it seemed like a perfectly terrible idea once I pencilled out the budgets. :)

This failure on the part of the CLECs (and the PTTs in the case of UMTS) to adequately assess demand has cost the industry hundreds of billions of dollars in wasted investment. It's a pity that so many got caught up in the delusions of the day. I recall one zealot (www.gildertech.com) repeatedly suggesting "Supply will create its own demand." This has proven to be utter nonsense, but the line is still repeated, to this day.
