Mount Holyoke stood firmly by Ellis early yesterday. The school's president, Joanne V. Creighton, issued a brief statement saying Ellis has a reputation for ''great integrity, honesty and honor. Generations of Mount Holyoke women count him among their most inspirational teachers.'' She added: ''We at the College do not know what public interest the Globe is trying to serve through a story of this nature.''
