Again, because of one particular machine. Unlike the desktop, WinCE has no application advantage over any other operating system, it is not like add on applications are that big of a factor for handhelds. If it were, the iPaq would have had a lot of problems, until very recently almost all of the applications for WinCE were either MIPS or SH-3.

And WinCE has some significant downsides. It is slow and a resource hog. Running a wireless link has, well some peculiarities that impact it's usefulness.

The facts indicate that Compaq hit a sweet spot as far as size, battery life, display and functionality. WinCE has little to do with it.
