UMC in talks to buy 8-in. fab from Conexant, reports say

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- In a move that would give it a direct presence in the United States, Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) is reportedly in talks to buy an 8-inch wafer fab from Conexant Systems Inc., according to sources in the industry.

Hsinchu-based UMC, the world's second largest silicon foundry provider, is said to be looking at buying Conexant's 8-inch fab in Newport Beach, Calif. That sub-micron fab makes various chip products based on CMOS and silicon germanium (SiGe) process technologies.

A spokesman for Conexant declined to comment, saying the reports are in the rumor stage. "We have nothing to add to the rumors," said a spokesman for communications-chip maker Conexant in Newport Beach. "We can't comment on rumors."

If UMC should strike a deal with Conexant, the move would represent the Taiwan company's first fab in the United States. At present, UMC has or building fabs in Taiwan, Japan, and Singapore.
