DRAM Demand in 2001 Likely to Be Lowest in History: Elpida GM
June 19, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Hidemori Inukai, vice president and general manager of technical marketing division of Elpida Memory Inc., told Nikkei Microdevices that he expects this year's demand for DRAM bit capacity to be the lowest ever.

Backing his opinion is the fact that demand for digital devices such as PCs has being shrinking. Demand for network-related equipment such as routers is also dull, according to Inukai.

He also said that in order for DRAM capacity to be quadrupled in three years, the demand for bit capacity must increase by 160 percent over the year-ago level, otherwise his business would not be profitable.

The demand increment once topped 200 percent a while ago, and the figures then sat around 170 percent and 175 percent, but never fell below 150 percent, Inukai said. There is a possibility the rate might go lower than 140 percent this time, touching on weak demand for other devices. He said this may affect other products such as logic LSIs in addition to DRAMs.
