SI actually predates the dot-com craze by a bit, and I don't think it required much in the way of venture capital. SI was originally bought out by go2net for $30million in stock, I think. It was probably more popular then than it is now, too.

It really doesn't take much money to run a web site, but overly grandiose plans have a way falling to pieces.
