I remember the Buddhists who immolated themselves in protests in the 60's. That made a big impression on me. And I am always mindful of the example of Ghandi, as well. He almost killed himself with his hunger strike. Those kind of peaceful, yet immensely powerful, protests which are self directed moral stands have always made an impact on me. Stupid random acts of violence and terrorism only make me suspect the cause of the people who perform them.
