Firms Wooing Chinese With Mobile Facts, New Creations

by Choi Ji-young
June 20, 2001

A trade mission to promote Korea's mobile telecommunications
technologies was launched in China on Tuesday.

The project is jointly sponsored by the public and private sectors, said
the Ministry of Information and Communication.

About 40 participating corporations from Korea, including Samsung
Electronics, LG Electronics and Sewon Telecom are going to Beijing,
Shanghai and Shenzhen for a week and will inform Chinese firms and
investors on technologies and on the business outlook of code division
multiple access mobile services, where Korea is considered a world
leader.

The focus of the event will be on exports of repeaters, devices that
receive a signal and then amplify and retransmit it to overcome
reduction in the strength of the signal, said the ministry.

"China Unicom, a leading mobile firm in China, said it plans to set up
repeaters in regions where signals are weak," said an official from the
information ministry.

"Small to medium sized repeater manufacturers, which have been
struggling in the saturated domestic market, are invigorated by the
news."
