Official proclamations of papal infallibility are very rare; my understanding is that the actual number is 2. But the odds of any backtracking from the "every sperm is sacred" view of Pius IX seems remote in the short and medium term, given the course of JPII's reign. Having grown up in the warm but ever diminishing afterglow of John XXIII and Vatican II, it all seems sort of a pity to me. But that era was probably an aberration, anyway, in historical terms. The Mother Church isn't exactly known for her forward-looking tendencies.
