Whether the girls are public figures is itself a matter of litigation. I think I could quite easily demonstrate that Chelsea is a public figure, especially given her public duties toward the end of her father’s tenure in addition to her role in her mother’s campaign. Demonstrating that the Bush girls are public figures becomes a bit more difficult. On defamation and slander, you are correct. The Supreme Court has given guidelines on this issue that account for the use of such loose and hyperbolic language as is typically found in these forums. Even a claim that a person is a turd or idiot or some other loosely used term is likely protected because, despite its form as a statement of fact, the language is clearly figurative and cannot possibly be construed as the maintenance of the truth of the underlying statement of fact.
