That was a great article, thanks for linking it. I've long considered Jack Welch the king of managed earnings. I'd probably short the company if I could untangle Jack's ball of yarn well enough to give me the confidence to do it. That ITT story reminded me of one of my favorite National Lampoon headlines: "ITT'S ALL OVER FOR ALLENDE!". Even better from that time period was the Mad Magazine billboard on top of the White House: "NIXXON - THE NAME HAS CHANGED BUT IT'S STILL THE SAME OLD GAS!"
