The money is not in the fiber, it is in the equipment to light and amplify it. Those 8 fibers are probably WDM'd already...fully lit. The rest of the fiber is completely dark. Good news for JDSU coming. See comment to K Bloomquist.

Nacchio ALSO said:

"...our Internet traffic is up 46 percent quarter over quarter, and when we look at our private peering arrangements, which we have with all the other big carriers, we see their traffic is up also.”

Nacchio went on to say that Qwest has actually lit more optical capacity for revenue in the second quarter of this year than it had for the entire year in 1998, emphasizing that it only lights new fibers when traffic demands warrant it. ...

“The problem the equipment folks have is an industry structural condition coupled with some economic slowdown,” he said on the call. “It is not that there are U.S. networks operating at 3 to 5 percent of capacity. So I think the utilization, the capacity question, the blunt issue is dramatically overplayed.”

PS: Note the "for revenue" part....48% Q/Q is almost as high as the glory days when people who did not have a clue were saying traffic would double every three months...so here is some real data that it is six months to double. I would be ecstatic if it was doubling every year...12 month Moores law would make it the fastest growing industry sector period...bettering semiconductors by six months...

Go ahead, keep trashing fiber optics...I am loading up as much as I can...keep talking...
