It must be very difficult for the companies to make these decisions if the fiber itself becomes obsolete fast.
Absolutely no one foresaw the vast over-investment in the industry. When GX, LVLT and MFNX got started in 97-8, the field was wide open for new competitors. Unfortunately for them several dozen "me too" players came into the game, and no one stopped to say "Hey, who's the customer going to be?", because everyone's eyes were on the dazzling new technology and the potential it had.

It's gotten a whole lot easier for companies to decide whether or not to burn their cash in trenches these days. Nancy Reagan had it right: "Just say no."
