HK PRESS: PCCW To Transform Unit Into Content Aggregator

June 19, 2001
Dow Jones Newswires

HONG KONG -- Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. (PCW) plans to transform its multimedia Internet platform, Network of the World, into a content aggregator from a content producer, South China Morning Post reports, citing unnamed company sources and analysts.

The paper said the company will announce the plan soon in a bid to ease concerns about its burn rate.

The telecom and Internet firm is in the final stages of talks with some Chinese-language content providers, company sources said, according to the Post.

PCCW spokeswoman Joan Wagner said the company can't comment on its plans for NOW as it is preparing to unveil a new business-to-commerce strategy soon. Previously, the company promised to unveil the strategy by the end of June.

The company is expected to scale back its investments in NOW and its iTV operations, according to the Post. But PCCW has already said it will limit spending to US$200 million this year on all its business-to-consumer operations, including NOW, iTV and its Netvigator Internet service provider system.
