Alcatel MPLS Migration Switch Takes Top Design Award

7670 Routing Switch Platform(lunched shortly before ALA/NN merger, former IP+ATM 670 platform) Enables Profitable Service Delivery

Paris, June 20, 2001 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced
that its 7670 Routing Switch Platform (RSP) took gold at the Industrial Designers
Society of America (IDSA) Awards. The award, presented by IDSA and sponsored
by Business Week, recognizes design excellence. Competition was especially tough
in this, the contest's 22nd year, with more than 1300 entrants coming together to set a
new record for participation.

The attractiveness of the 7670 RSP lies not just in award-winning design, but also in
its native MPLS ability to aggregate ATM and IP traffic with classic reliability and quality
of service. This platform is used the world over by carriers to generate profits while
simultaneously preparing for network core convergence using Multi Protocol Label
Switching (MPLS).

"Considering the strength of this field, taking gold is no easy task." says Bill Clem of
the IDSA. "Alcatel put a lot of effort into user-centred design that marries the best of
form and function."

"The pedigree of the IDSA and quality of its competitions are well respected - it's one
of the reasons we entered the contest in the first place" says Steve McCaughan,
Alcatel's VP of the RSP Program. "As carrier networks evolve towards more
profitable service delivery, emphasis on design and ease-of-use have a bigger impact
on revenues."

Leading up to the IDSA award win, the 7670 enjoyed several MPLS-related
achievements. In addition to being the first multiprotocol core platform to
simultaneously run CR-LDP and RSVP-TE signalling protocols, it also successfully
completed MPLS interoperability tests with seven other vendors in trials conducted by
the Optical Internetworking Forum.

Alcatel receives its award from the IDSA and Business Week in an official ceremony
held August 18th of this year in Boston at the Berklee Performance Centre.
