I agree. It doesn't.

I fail to accept that future decisions not yet made influence the nature of a decision today.

Agreed there to a point. For me, the real issue doesn't hinge on the decision that is ultimately made in the future. Instead, it's the intent at the time of sale that is critical in determining if it is based on market timing.

My understanding of the context of your comment being discussed was that there was the intent to buy the stock at a lower price and that the intention was the reason for selling the stock.
