that is the most practical and workable solution I have ever heard.

Unfortunately it's not terribly democratic - but I suspect there'd be a majority in Britain for it. I'm not so sure that Eire would like it, mind you... LOL, I'm sure they wouldn't: I know a lot of Irish people and their overwhelming consensus is that they definitely do NOT want NI as it is: union at some indefinite time in the future? maybe... when it's peaceful, stable and united itself. (Not to mention that the various terrorist gangs seem to be following the example of the Mafia, and leaping into organised violent crime as their original cause loses all relevance to modernity).

Meanwhile, here's what we have to tolerate:

I can't recall any case where a country has forced out some rebellious or troublesome province/colony/territory into involuntary independence. Amicable/planned divorce, or gradual separation, or of course siezed independence (sometimes after central collapse) - all common enough.
Sadly, national rulers seem to cling on as a matter of pride, I suppose to avoid showing national weakness or similar. Even when this is plainly against the wishes of citizens both inside and outside said territory. I suppose it's understandable if you believe the freed province may become an enemy, or be used by an enemy as a staging ground for some hostility or spreading insurrection... but I'm sure this isn't always the case.
