And I think this was the belief of a lot of the press (although not as outspoken), and indirectly a lot of the notebook makers (more outspoken - with public drops of teh transmeta CPU support in products).

I still don't see why emulation would ever be as good as as a dedicated design when trying to run an existing code base.

I think transmeta would have done much better coming out with a Java CPU that they could have gone up against ARM. At least there they would be judged on their own merits, and wouldn't have the performance hit (overhead) of emulation.
