SECTOR TALK: Economically sensitve stocks are outperforming the broader market today as today's economic data has bolstered perceptions about the U.S. economy. The Morgan Stanley cyclical index, for example, is up 1.2% on the day led by continued strength in retailers' shares. Also strong for a second day are the home builders' stocks, which are up 2% on the day on the heels of solid earnings reports, a drop in mortgage rates, and record mortgage applications. Softward stocks are strong at +1.5% as tech stocks rebound from their most recent drop. Some defensive groups are higher despite strength in cyclicals; drug stocks are up 0.7%, for example. But utilities are down sharply, falling 3%.
