The question is really much deeper than the ownership of ANTC. The question is why NT wants to divest the access technology? The access technology in view of the convergence technology of multiple access protocol in wireless to come through DWDM makes current access equipment and business obsolete. So, some production will cease, or business closed until new equipment design comes through.

NT will then concentrate on DWDM equipment technology to accommodate the wireless protocol. Enabling the DWDM with multiple access will increase bandwidth further per fiber optical cable. Equipment will be much more complex and must be miniaturized with deep submicron lithography in semiconductors.

Incidentally Murata has new chip sets for convergence of GSM W-CDMA and DCS(digital cellular system). That leaves ATT and Lucent to do TDMA and CDMA combining W-CDMA and DCS. It is all coming together next year. DOCOMO will have new video(camera) wireless handsets in August, 2001.

Coming back to ANTC, we will anticipate independent development in the convergence technology and continued ATT cable and wireless opportunity. ANTC may scoop NT on multiple access equipment development in DWDM(cable only). It is wireless protocol equipment to gyrate the different laser diodes on the single glass fiber.

Denver- From what I recall, it was a brokerage that mentioned a, "concern about NT disposing of Arris shares(post ANTC-Arris meger)." It didn't come directly out of NT. IMO, what you believe is accurate. NT's PR is a non-event just reiterating what they had planned to do months ago. But I'm only guessing.

It would make little sense for NT to sell their substantial amount of shares on the open market. Even if they were planning to, they wouldn't announce it to the world as that would make their investment lose to much value.

Like you said, it's probably just a non-event that was taken out of context. I hope so. -MikeM(From Florida)
