Then it's cheaper to buy a DWDM from LUMM then to fire up all those lasers to light the fibers.

And why did the fiberoptic companies build all those fiber lines if they were only scratching the surface of usable wavelengths with the wavelengths used today?

What is the maximum # of wavelengths a DWDM can split the light into? 256?
