What we have here is a problem of journalists and some analysts knowing just enough to be dangerous.

Of course there is excess fiber in the ground. It costs just about as much to lay a single strand as it does to lay 500 in a bundle. Doesn't it make complete sense to install the 500 strand bundle rather than the single strand you need at the moment? It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.

So, the rest of those fibers are unlit ("dark fiber") and can be used for future service. But this can hardly be construed as a bandwidth glut.

It there were a bandwidth glut, I'd be getting 10 meg service for the price of 2 meg. If anyone noticed, broadband Internet access prices are going up, not down.

It makes you wonder.
