From everything I hear, cash compensation is distinctly lower. Not only that, the companies can insist on much higher qualifications than before when hiring new people. An anecdote: An extremely productive bright young chap was working with me two years ago. He left for some company with attractive options etc. This week, to my joy, he sheepishly showed up asking for a job and of course he got it. He was willing to take 2/3 of what he previously was paid. By the way, Thomas Mercer-Hursh can certainly give you authoritative info about this area.
