Well, if its 1190 wavelengths and if its cheaper to split up the wavelengths than light another fiber, I sure wouldn't be investing in fiber manufacturers like Corning.

This could be good for the fiber networks if they simply can get paid for transmitting data at the lower cost of DWDM. But if they get paid by simply leasing out the fiber space then they're screwed also for years to come? How do they get paid? I fear it's by leasing out the fiber space, and the lessee must light it.

Of course they can change their billing methods. But I would imagine they lease with long term contracts.

Anyone know?

BELL LABS ESTIMATES THEORETICAL CAPACITY OF FIBER AT 100 TBPS
Scientists from Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs published a paper in the British journal Nature in which they estimate the theoretical capacity of a standard, commercially available fiber strand is approximately 100 Tbps. Current commercial DWDM systems operate at under 2 Tbps and lab experiments have shown the potential for 10 Tbps systems. Previous estimates for fiber capacity have ranged from 50 – 350 Tbps. The Bell Labs study took a multi-disciplinary approach to calculate the theoretical spectral capacity. lucent.com
